    HOME SAFETY AND FIRE RESCUE CHECKLIST

    Please take the time to complete the following home safety and fire rescue checklist. As you evaluate each line item, circle the line items number that needs safety corrections. When you are finished, review the numbers circled-this will identify what hazards are present for you to take corrective action.

    SMOKE DETECTION

    1.  Have smoke alarms on every level of your home
    2. Have you changed the batteries in your smoke alarm within the last year
    3. Have you tested your smoke alarm in the last month 
    4. Are your smoke alarms over 10 years old 

    CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS

    Some items that can create carbon monoxide in your home include: fireplaces,heaters, hot water heaters, gas stoves, vehicles, grills and dryers.

    1. Do not cover the carbon monoxide detector at any time
    2. Do not place in an area that is excessively hot or cold
    3. Never place near open doors or windows
    4. Never place carbon monoxide detectors in the corner of a room, near the floor or at the peak of a vaulted ceiling
    5. Know how to operate and change batteries
    6. Make sure your alarm is in an area where you can hear the alarm and where the alarm can be seen
    7. Place near the bedroom or a room where people spend a lot of time such as the living room or main hallway

     BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS

    1. You and your children can open all windows from inside for escape
    2. Smoke alarms are located just outside and inside each bedroom
    3. A list of important and emergencies phone numbers is located next to each phone or programmed in each telephone
    4. You have a working flashlight in each bedroom
    5. Combustibles are kept at lease 3 feet away from space heaters(curtains,walls,pets,furniture,etc...
    6. Bulbs are at or below maximum wattage prescribed by the manufacturer in your light fixtures
    7. Electrical outlets are not overloaded
    8. Extension cords are used as temporary, not permanent, wiring
    9. Cords of appliances and light fixtures are in good condition (not frayed or damaged)
    10. Matches, lighters, poisons, and medications are stored out of children's reach
    11. Old medicine is dumped in the toilet and flushed rather than being placed in a trash can
    12. Cleaning products are kept in the original containers---out of the reach of children
    13. Candles are kept away from combustibles and extinguished before going to sleep
    14. All family members know how to get out of each room (at least two ways out)
    15. All family members know your family escape plan and meeting place outside the home
    16. All family members know how to crawl low under smoke
    17. An escape latter or rope is available for evacuation from upper levels in the event of a fire

    KITCHEN

    1. Appliance cords are kept out of reach of small children
    2. You are careful not to overload electrical outlets
    3. Appliances are kept away from water
    4. The cords are in good condition
    5. Appliances are unplugged when not in use
    6. The stove top is clean of grease and oil
    7. Combustibles are kept away from stove
    8. You are careful not to store "goodies" above the stove
    9. All family members know not to wear loose clothing that can catch fire when cooking and keep a lid handy that fits the pot/pan in case of fire
    10. All family members know to never to walk away from food cooking on stove
    11. Handles on pots and pans are turned inward while cooking to prevent them from being pulled down by small children or bumped by adults
    12. All cleaning products and other chemicals are stored out of reach of young children (not underneath the sink)
    13. All family members know to cool a burn with cool water (not ice or other remedies)
    14. Fire extinguisher is easily accessible at the exit and family members are trained in it's use

    LIVING AREA  

    1. Do not overload electrical outlets
    2. If there is a smoker, use large deep ashtrays
    3. After a party, furniture is check for smoldering cigarette ashes
    4. The fire place has a screen/glass covering
    5. A metal container with a lid is used to remove ashes
    6. You had your chimney cleaned within the last year
    7. Combustibles are not stored near a fire place
    8. Each smoke and carbon is tested monthly and they work properly
    9. The smoke alarms have been vacuumed recently
    10. If you have cabinets and storage drawers, install safety latches to keep small children away from dangerous items or confined spaces
    11. Appliance and lighting cords are in good condition
    12. Candles are kept away from combustibles and extinguished before leaving room
    13. There are no holes in walls or missing ceiling tiles that would allow for rapid fire spread

    Storage/work areas

     

    1. The water heater is set below 125 degrees 
    2. The furnace or heating unit is checked and cleaned once a year
    3. Area around the furnance is clean and open (do not use as a storage area)
    4. The fuse box has correct size fuse for each circuit
    5. The dryer lint trap is cleaned after each use
    6. Cleaning agents are stored in their original containers out of the reach of children
    7.  Avoid unnecessary clutter that adds to fuel loading in your home (newspapers, boxes, unused furniture and toys

    Garage

    1. Oily rags and mops with paint, oil, varnish and polish are kept in a covered metal can and disposed os after they are completely dried out (to avoid spontaneous combustion
    2. Combustibles liquids are kept in tight containers away from heat sources (pilot lights, etc.
    3. All gasoline is stored in approved safety cans
    4. Work areas are kept in order and clear of obstructions
    5. All chemicals are kept in their original containers
    6. If portable heaters are used, they are kept in well-ventilated spaces
    7. The correct fuel is being used in all appliances or machinery
    8. Lawn mowers and other machinery are started and refilled outdoors in ventilated areas
    9. There are no holes in the walls or ceilings that would allow for rapid fire spread

    Fire extinguisher is easily accessible at the exit and family members are trained in it's use

    Exterior of the home

    1. The address numbers for your home are posted facing the street in a color that is easly visible and can be read from the street
    2. If your home has wood shingles, your wood shingles should be treated with a fire retardant
    3. All antennas are properly grounded
    4. Electrical connections are snug
    5. Gas and charcoal barbecues are stored away from the house
    6. Propane or butane cylinders are stored outside of the home or garage areas
    7. Weeds and brush are cleared at least 10 feet away from house
